A mindful way to learn an instrument
It’s all in your head…
Or out of your head, actually
Learning an instrument can be as much a matter of the mind as it is the body. While it's important to practice technical skills and develop musicianship, it's equally as important to be able to sit down behind the kit with a level head. If the mind is churning, the brain isn't learning.
Taking a more mindful and somatic approach to learning an instrument allows us to connect with our bodies, more readily retain what we're learning, and connect with the music on a much deeper level.
Drumming can be a meditation in itself. Entering a flow state becomes easier when the body is occupied, and drumming is an all-hands-on-deck activity for your limbs.
Who can learn to play?
And why should you?
Anybody with a willingness to learn. Percussion has and always will be everybody's instrument. Go ahead, tap whatever is next to you with your hand (given it doesn't have a pulse). Congratulations, you are now a percussionist! Whether you've never touched a drumstick before, you're an intermediate player, or a well-seasoned veteran, all ability levels are welcome at East Coast DrumWorks.
Food for the brain and the heart! Learning something new is a great way to keep the mind sharp, while moving the body primes the brain for use. Why not do both at the same time? Learn while you burn (calories) - the all-in-one package.
Consistency is key. Learning a new instrument, or developing a new skill of any kind, requires a daily routine. Having just a single consistent good habit in your day can be a catalyst for positive change. Even 10 minutes a day can have a big impact.
While you can learn percussion at any age, I've found my teaching style is best suited to those with a few years of life behind them. For this reason, lessons are generally ages 7+. Though there are exceptions to every rule, and if you feel lessons at ECDW would be a good fit for your younger child, don't hesitate to reach out!
